Fun Stat Nerd Tidbit: Georgia Tech / The Toolbox: Adj. Run-Pass Ratio

New, 2 comments

Subtitle: The Run is on the comeback.

Simply looking at run-pass ratios can sometimes give us a misguided look at which teams intended to run or pass the most, and for obvious reasons: raw run-pass ratios are dictated significantly by how often teams are ahead or behind, or how often they are in standard downs or passing downs.

With that in mind, I've come up with what I'm calling Adj. Run-Pass Ratio. The intent is simple -- use teams' standard downs and passing downs ratios (as found in each team's 2011 profile) and adjust them so that each of the two ratios is weighted the same for each team. This doesn't account for whether somebody is ahead or behind, but it still contains a much stronger narrative than raw run-pass does.

With that in mind, you can probably guess who places atop the overall list in a given year: Navy and Air Force. Bo-ring. Let's look at only BCS teams and see what it tells us about recent history.

Highest Adj. Run-Pass Ratios, BCS Conference Teams (2005-10)
1. 2009 Georgia Tech (80.7%)
2. 2010 Georgia Tech (79.2%)
3. 2008 Georgia Tech (77.1%)
4. 2005 West Virginia (74.5%)
5. 2006 West Virginia (69.7%)
6. 2007 West Virginia (68.4%)
7. 2010 Nebraska (65.9%)
8. 2010 Illinois (65.6%)
9. 2010 Mississippi State (65.4%)
10. 2009 Mississippi State (65.1%)
11. 2009 Virginia Tech (65.0%)
12. 2010 Wisconsin (64.5%)
13. 2010 Auburn (64.2%)
14. 2007 Arkansas (64.2%)
15. 2008 Virginia Tech (64.0%)

The top three teams were all Paul Johnson's Georgia Tech teams, and the next three were Rich Rodriquez's West Virginia teams. The interesting part of the list, for me, is below the top six. Five of the next seven teams on the list played in 2010, a sign that in adjusting to general defensive adjustments to the spread offense, some teams -- both spread and non-spread teams -- are running more. I would expect that to continue in 2011.

Full (huge) list after the jump.
