The (Lack of) Sustainability of Close Game Success

original article link

One thing which comes up from time to time is the idea that teams "know how to win", that success in close games reflects something fundamental about a program's abilities, character, etc. And that somehow programs can actually sustain close game success over any kind of long term. This idea is largely false, and the below analysis will demonstrate that fact.

Let's start with overtime. Few if any plays over the course of a game are as critical as the ones that take place in overtime. So how do programs fare year to year in overtime games? Let's take a look.

The below table shows the net overtime wins for each of the 120 1-A programs (ignoring the six newcomers) from 2007 to 2012 (1-A games only). In this case, net wins means the number of wins less losses, so +1 could mean 1-0, 2-1, 3-2, etc.

The table sorts the teams by the average net overtime wins per year. As you can see, very few programs were able to sustain any kind of meaningful success (or failure) in net overtime wins over a six year span. The highest number of net wins in six years was +4, shared by Hawai'i and Navy, while the lowest number was eight different programs. In fact, the 1-A wide correlation of net overtime wins year to year is 0.3%. In other words, it looks like a complete random noise generator.

Now, it's fair to point out that plenty of teams don't even play one overtime game in a given season, so this analysis is at the least incomplete. So let's move on from overtime and instead look at margin, in this case games decided by three or less points.

And once again, we really don't see much in the way of sustained success. Out of 120 1-A programs, only nine averaged at least +1 net close wins, and only 11 averaged at least 1 net close losses. And even those with outlier averages largely came through one especially outlier season.

Auburn, with a +1.5 net close win average, had +5 in 2010, and a +0.8 average the other years. ECU, the other program with a +1.5 net close win average, was +7 in 2007-2008 and averaged +0.5 the other four seasons. Utah's +1.33 average hinged on an outlier 2008. Virginia had two +4 seasons (2007 and 2011), and was net negative for the other four. Wyoming was +4 and +3 in two seasons and net zero for the other four. Texas was positive net close game wins in four of the six seasons, but zero in one and negative in the last.

It's a similar story on the negative side. Arkansas St was -8 combined in 2008-2010, and zero each of the other three seasons. Arizona was negative in 2007-2010, zero in 2011 and positive in 2012. Iowa was negative five of the six years, and +2 in 2009. Pitt was -8 for 2010-2012, and +1 for 2007-2009. Minnesota was -6 for 2007-2009, and even each of the next three seasons.

The only program that was particularly consistently negative was Arizona St, who was negative each season for 2008-2012, with a -10 total... and the year before was +2.

And those are the most extreme cases. Move towards the center and it's even clearer that it's almost all just noise. Oklahoma was been negative net close game wins in 2007, 2009 and 2011, and zero or positive the even years. Boise was zero or negative for every year 2007-2011, and then balanced it all out with a +2 in 2012. Notre Dame was zero or negative for every year 2007-2011, then almost balanced it all out with a +3 in 2012. Navy was a horrible -5 in close game wins in 2011, but zero or positive the other five seasons. Maryland was -1, then +3, then -2, then +2, then 0, then -3. And it goes on and on.

And in this case, the year to year correlation of net close wins in this case is actually negative, measured at -1.2%. So close game success (or failure) in a given season simply is not any kind of indicator of future success.

But what happens if we relax the standard a bit? With that in mind, let's look at games within 7 points or less. Here, there are a few more seemingly consistent outliers (good and bad). For instance, ECU, Northwestern and LSU have been pretty consistently solid in this regard, and BYU had been before a major reversal in 2012. And on the negative side, Indiana, Bowling Green, Akron and ASU have been pretty consistently bad in this regard.

Overall, though, the same story of very low correlation applies, with most programs' year to year net close game numbers strongly suggestive of random noise. In fact, for games of margin 7 or less, the year to year correlation is 3%, which is higher than the other two segments, but still essentially a coinflip.

And while there are some programs who've sustained some degree of success (or failure), it's worth noting that from 2007-2011 there were 51 instances where a team was +4 or better net close wins or -4 or worse net close losses. Of those 51 instances, only twice did a team repeat that status th next year (Ball St +4 in 2011 and +4 in 2012, and SMU -5 in 2007 and -4 in 2008). And one time it actually flipped (Ohio St -4 in 2011 and +6 in 2012).

Moreover, there have been times a program seems like it's especially good or bad with close game results, and then turns it around. Washington was an awful -9 from 2007-2009, and then +3 the next three seasons. Kansas St -2 from 2007-2009, and then +10 the next three seasons. Auburn was -2 from 2007-2009, and then +9 the next three seasons. Stanford was -3 from 2007-2009, and then +8 the next three seasons. Oklahoma was -4 from 2007-2009, and then +5 the next three seasons.

And on the flip side, Georgia Tech was a great +6 from 2007-2009, and then -3 the next three seasons. Pitt was +3 from 2007-2009, and then -8 the next three seasons. Cincy was +7 from 2007-2009, and then -1 the next three seasons.

That's good news for the programs with a bunch of net close losses in 2012 (Kansas, Wisconsin and New Mexico at -5, Troy at -4). And it's bad news for the pgorams with a bunch of net close wins in 2012 (Stanford and Ohio St at +6, Tulsa, Louisville and Notre Dame, at +5, Navy, Ball St and Arkansas St at +4).

Of course, sometimes teams have fewer net close wins because they improve to the point where the games just aren't close (2012 Kansas St, 2011 LSU and 2009 Alabama are good examples of this), but more often it means the next season takes a downturn to some degree.
