You could say it about any sport, actually. The Bruins got hot for a few rounds and won the Cup. The Mavericks caught fire and won the NBA title. The Cardinals were on life support, heated up for a couple months and improbably won the World Series. Can you even remember regular seasons meaning this little? Nowadays, you just want to make it to the Final Four — after that, it's all about executing and catching a couple of breaks.
Via Bill Simmons' Super Bowl post-mortem column. A pretty clear (if indirect) endorsement of the smallest college football playoff possible, really.

Absolutely true
what’s weird is that the NFL really used to not be like this, as far as I can remember; once upon a time it was pretty much expected that the Super Bowl would be 1 and 2 seeds with not that many exceptions. Here’s the last decade of SB champs by seed:
2011/12 4 seed (over a 1 seed)
2010/11 6 seed (over a 2 seed)
2009/10 1 seed (over a 1 seed)
2008/9 2 seed (over a 4 seed)
2007/8 5 seed (over a 1 seed)
2006/7 3 seed (over a 1 seed)
2005/6 6 seed (over a 1 seed)
2004/5 2 seed (over a 1 seed)
2003/4 1 seed (over a 3 seed)
2002/3 2 seed (over a 1 seed)
In the last 10 years, 2 SB’s were what you’d expect based on seed, one was an even seed matchup, and SEVEN have been seed upsets. Also, 4/6 seeds have made more often than 3/5 seeds, and in the last seven seasons, only twice was there not a 4 or worse seed.
There's one sport you still can't say it about
though the casual fans and playoff crowd are doing their damndest to screw it up.
