The Toolbox: Adj. POE
Today my most recent Varsity Numbers column went up. The topic: POE, or Points Over Expected.
POE stands for "Points Over Expected." The idea for POE is simple: It compares a runner's production (in terms of EqPts) to the production that would have been expected of an average back given the same carries against the same opponents. A runner with, say, a plus-6.0 Adj. POE produced the equivalent of a touchdown more value than the average FBS running back would have with the same carries.
POE = EqPts - Expected EqPts.
Last year, we added an adjustment to account for the quality of a runner's offensive line (based on the team's Adj. Line Yards ratings). So below, you will see a raw POE figure and the more comprehensive Adj. POE figure. Backs are ranked by Adj. POE.
To avoid cluttering up the column with too much data -- while still hoping to provide as much data as one would want to see -- I figured I could use Study Hall as a warehouse of sorts. Below the jump is a complete listing of Adj. POE rankings for 2010, separated into two tables: one showing all runners who piled up at least 100 carries in 2010, and another showing runners who totaled between 50 and 99.
Later today, I'll do the same for the other measure in the column, Highlight Yards. If you notice any errors, please do not hesitate to pass them along; there are just enough manual steps in this process to introduce the possibility of error on my part. Also, as mentioned in the column itself, thanks to Marty at cfbstats.com, we should have a Receiver POE figure to unveil sometime this summer. Huzzah!

Now, for those who toted the ball between 50 and 99 times. As you'll see, this list consists basically of quarterbacks, receivers and all-purpose backs, and possibly a few running backs who should have gotten a few more carries. (And a few who should have probably not received any at all.)

How is the o-line component calculated (generally speaking)?
It seems like if you did some sort of average of how the running backs on that team fared or how they did against similar competition you might have a scenario where a terrible back up running back boosts up the Adj POE of the starting running back just because the talent gap is so large between the two.
The adjustment is made from the line's Adj. Line Yards rankings.
If a line ranked high in terms of run blocking, then a runner’s Adj. POE is going to get siphoned off a bit with the idea being that the line did a decent amount of the work for the runner. Auburn’s line was great, and Newton’s numbers fell. Wyoming’s line was atrocious, and Carta-Samuels’ and Alexander’s numbers rose to a semi-unrealistic degree.
Posted this at Outsiders, and I'll post it here too...
Interesting question via Twitter: “You say high variability year 2 year. Shouldnt that indicate flaw in statistic? In other words, if an individual stat has high variability, maybe what you’re measuring is not under control of individual”
Thoughts on this? Since it deals with running backs, and since it seems RBs are some of the most high-variability/high-interchangeability players in football, I’ve been willing to accept wild swings from year to year. Is that being too dismissive?
Baseball equivalent
In looking at baseball, stats like BABIP have allowed us to better identified a player’s “true” talent level by using statistics that are more consistent year-to-year. This is showing high variability year-to-year, which would indicate that there are still one or more factors that still need to be identified and controlled for.
Unfortunately football has much more complex team interactions than baseball, and isolated a true ability level is not as straightforward. but I would agree that other factors should definitely be explored if this is to somehow indicate a player’s true ability.
Excess noise was my initial thought, as well.
I’ll use an example at Ohio State. Brandon Saine ran for 739 yards (5.10 ypc.) in 2009, but seemed to struggle in 2010 with only 337 yards (4.89 ypc.) It’s unclear to me, however, whether Saine’s struggles were indicative of any actual regression on his part, or whether he simply received less opportunities because of the improved play of his competitor, Boom Herron. If Saine’s carries hadn’t decreased after the fifth game or so, would his numbers have began moving back to the mean of the previous season?
There’s also an issue of scheme. Ohio State, at least from our partial observation and tracking, used more man-blocking in the running game than they did during 2009. After watching him for four years, it’s pretty clear to us that Saine is better at the one-cut zone-blocking than he is behind man-blocking. Was he worse, or did the scheme just emphasize his weaknesses more in 2010 than 2009?
I don’t have an answer for any of this, but I do think the Adj. POE is valuable when combined with some context. It confirms what we were seeing with our eyes— that Saine was struggling— although it doesn’t quite tell us why.
I think its ok
Just because there is alot of variability from year to year doesn’t mean its not fun to research and delve into the numbers. Plus there is alot of variability on an individual level in CFB because most players only really contribute for 2 years or so. On an individual player level I agree that its ok to accept wild swings

Is this adjusted for opponent?
Just seems backward that guys like Cam Newton had their POE reduced by an adjustment. Seems they should get some credit for facing tough defenses. Or is that accounted for in the OL adjustment?
The "Expected" piece of POE...
…means “expected output based on the opponent.” So POE is simply the output compared to the expected output. Adj. POE is additionally adjusted for offensive line quality.
