F/+ Rankings, End Of Regular Season

Your end-of-regular-season (sans Army-Navy) F/+ rankings are now posted at Outsiders. I'll say this much: Oklahoma State gave it a run. They made up half of Alabama's lead with their romp over Oklahoma. Meanwhile, LSU just continues to expand their lead. Now ... we are going to be recalculating F/+ ratings from previous seasons soon -- to account for both a slight change to S&P+ and the addition of the special teams component -- so this isn't a perfect comparison, but this is still worth noting in the meantime: since 2005, only two teams have posted an F/+ rating higher than LSU's +38.1%: 2005 Texas (+38.4%) and 2008 Florida (+38.3%). They are just so damn good. They refused to play offense for the first half against Georgia and still a) won easily and b) played well enough for the game to rank second in Off. F/+.

I love the great work Football Outsiders does.

Unfortunately, at RBR when I pointed out that OSU’s defense was more efficient than Arkansas’, that caused a bit of a strong reaction.

I suppose even if Bama were to blowout LSU, which I don’t see happening, LSU would still rank #1 in F/+.

It seems like you overrate special teams

Just a quick glance at the ratings, and many of the teams in the top 40 that seem dramatically off by the eyeball test have extreme special teams numbers.

It appears...

…that the offensive, defensive, and special teams are simply added together to get a final sum. I would agree that special teams probably doesn’t deserve 33% weight. But if you look closer, you can see that the special teams percentage numbers are much smaller than the offensive and defensive numbers. In other words, the difference between a great special teams unit and a terrible special teams unit isn’t nearly as pronounced as the difference between a horrific defense and a terrible defense.

As a result the percentages are lower, and the special teams component is probably more akin to 10% weight, which sounds about right.

No homer.

So, ST is 28% of FEI?

I suppose by definition, S&P+ for ST is impossible.

My bad.

″S″ does not mean ″Standard″ nor does ″P″ mean ″Passing″.
